ABSTRACT
This study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of domestic violence against women in India, focusing on its societal and legal implications. Domestic violence, a widespread issue, affects millions of women across various socio-economic backgrounds, often going unreported due to cultural, familial, and societal pressures. The research examines the legal framework in India, including the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) 2005, which aims to safeguard women from various forms of abuse. The study also evaluates the effectiveness of these laws, considering the challenges women face in accessing legal remedies, such as lack of awareness, social stigma, and the slow judicial process. Additionally, it delves into societal attitudes towards domestic violence, exploring the cultural and traditional norms that perpetuate gender-based violence in Indian society. The study utilizes qualitative methods, including case studies, interviews, and surveys, to gather insights into the lived experiences of women who have faced domestic violence. The findings highlight the gap between legal provisions and their implementation, underscoring the need for stronger legal awareness campaigns, better enforcement of laws, and a shift in societal attitudes to foster a supportive environment for women. The research concludes with recommendations for improving legal protections, enhancing support services for survivors, and addressing the deep-rooted societal issues that sustain domestic violence.
