ABSTRACT

In contemporary India, the role of mythology in promoting social cohesion and understanding cannot be understated. Devdutt Pattanaik, a prominent mythologist and author, has made significant contributions to this field by interpreting ancient myths in ways that resonate with modern issues of diversity and development. His work provides a unique lens through which the rich tapestry of Indian mythology can be used as a tool for unity in a diverse society. This paper explores Pattanaik’s approach to mythology, which is not merely an academic exercise but a strategic engagement with cultural narratives that shape the societal norms and values. By dissecting myths and presenting them in a context that highlights universal themes of love, valour, sacrifice, and justice, Pattanaik bridges the cultural divides that often segment Indian society. His storytelling articulates the underlying unity of human experiences, thus fostering a sense of connectedness among India’s diverse populations. Furthermore, the paper delves into how Pattanaik’s interpretations aid in the development of a more inclusive society by challenging the rigid norms that often lead to social stratification. Through his works, Pattanaik advocates for a broader understanding of the roles and expectations that define both individual and collective identities in India. His focus on inclusivity and cultural awareness encourages a developmental paradigm that respects diversity while promoting unity. The analysis includes a review of several of Pattanaik’s influential works, such as "My Gita" and "Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata," highlighting how these publications contribute to the discourse on unity and development. By examining Pattanaik’s narrative techniques and thematic focuses, this paper aims to underscore the pivotal role of mythology in crafting a cohesive narrative for India, a country marked by its myriad cultures and traditions. Through this exploration, the paper asserts that understanding and leveraging the power of cultural narratives is crucial in the pursuit of societal harmony and sustainable development.
