Page No. : 174-179
ABSTRACT
The glimpses of traditional values and modernity is presented in the novels of Anita Desai in which the Indian society is swaying. In the present pretext, nuclear family has been taking the place of joint family. The sense of brotherhood is diminishing away and the people are now selfish, alone and alienated. The Indian woman is now a developed, competent and worldly woman but she is bounded with chains and shackles of the society. These boundations are the traditions which had made her to accept the compulsion of the given rules that she had never integrated into her own personality. She is playing the role of daughter-in-law, wife, mother but not of herself and trying hard to liberate herself from the overburdened roles in the society. The Women culture can be achieved by sacrificing the tradition and heading towards the modernisation but there is a need to ponder over the loss that the society will face if we completely forgo the tradition.
