ABSTRACT

Construction sector comes under unorganised sector of aneconomy. The term unorganisedlabour has been defined as thoseworkers who have not been able to organise themselves in pursuit of theircommon interest due to certain constraints like casual nature of employment, ignorance and illiteracy, small and scattered size ofestablishment etc. As per the survey carried out by the National SampleSurvey Organisation in the year 1999-2000, the total employment in bothorganised and unorganised sectors in the country was of the order of 39.7crores around 2.8 crores in the organised sector and 36.9 crores (about93%) in the unorganised sector.Out of 36.9 crores workers in the unorganised sector, 23.7 croreworkers (60.00%) are employed in agricultural sector, about 1.7 crore inconstruction sector(4.00%), 4.1 crore in manufacturing (10.00%), 3.7crore in transport and communication services (9.00%) and 3.7 crores intrade (9.00%). The need was felt, therefore, to put focus on the problemsfaced by the workers in unorganised sector with special reference to theworkers in construction work.
