ABSTRACT

Literacy is one of the subjective boundaries of the economic development of a space or locale. The literacy is additionally one of subjective boundaries which is a genuine estimation of human turn of events and it has been assuming an imperative part in economic change among individuals, have a place with various layers of society. The current examination look at the pattern of literacy rates in India overall and especially during various progressive periods. In this examination, the goal is pointed toward setting up a reason impact connection between the developments in literacy in during various progressive enumeration periods. To get the ideal outcomes, the optional information have been utilized from different censuses; government reports distributed every now and then. Based on the investigation, it was tracked down that the entire nation encountered an extensive development during various enumeration periods, yet there has been critical inconstancy displayed in the degrees of literacy in the viewpoint of last four decades of the census data.

Now in the perspective of census data related to literacy rate, it has been concluded that according to the census of 1971 literacy rate was 34.45 percent which increased to 72.98 percent in 2011. In the same way rural literacy rate in 1971 was 27.90 percent which increased to 66.77 percent in 2011. On the contrary urban literacy rate in 1971 was 60.20 percent which increased to 84.11 percent in 2011. As per the census of 2011, the highest literacy rate (94.0 percent) was found of the state of Kerala and the lowest was of the state of Bihar with 61.8 percent. The researcher has made a modest attempt to find out some trustworthy facts about the literacy rate of four decades from 1971 to 2011.
