The socio-political transformations
anticipated with the establishment of Panchayati raj have not materialised and
have remained mostly unrealized for a long period of time. More significantly,
the primary goals of panchayati raj, such as social equality, gender equity,
and improvements in grassroots leadership, are not accomplished in a meaningful
way. There is a need for change the planning system at the national level. A

planning process. Panchayats must be empowered with sufficient authority to
manage resources and local development should be incorporated. The purpose of
this article is to highlight the panchayats’ involvement in rural development
and methods to enhance their performance.
