ABSTRACT

It is an established fact that Whitman was varied and many sided personality of the modern age. Generally speaking, a symbol is one that represents something. It is usually represents a different idea. In Whitman’s poetry, one comes across a number of symbols which enrich the texture of his poetry. A symbol is not only one having connotative meaning, but also emotive and evocative.  The symbols used by Whitman in his poetry exert a profound influence in shaping his ideas. The most frequently used symbols are of leave, self, and ‘I.’ He uses his symbols in a very effective way to put forward and convey the exact and precise meaning in his poetry.
