ABSTRACT

The Partition of India in 1947 stands as a watershed moment in South Asian history, profoundly shaping Indian English literature. The traumatic events of displacement, communal violence, and identity fragmentation found vivid expression in literary narratives, capturing the emotional and social aftermath of this epochal divide. Central to these narratives are women, whose experiences of displacement and resilience serve as poignant reflections of societal upheaval. Female characters often become symbolic of both the trauma of Partition and the strength required to rebuild lives amidst chaos. This study examines how Partition literature intersects with gender, highlighting women’s voices as essential to understanding the multifaceted legacy of this historical moment. This paper underscores the enduring influence of Partition on Indian English fiction and its contribution to the discourse on identity, trauma, and social transformation.
