Page No. : 674-679

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a protest against manipulation of lower class people by upper strata of society. Mulk Raj Anand is a reformer and a social novelist who wrote on social evils like class conflicts, social injustice and exploitation of poor people by the rich class. Anand’s literature is called literature of protest which strikes hard at the root of sectionalism, snobbery, capitalism and everything that causes modern man’s plight and degradation. Untouchable and Coolie are the best example of manipulation of underdogs and downtrodden class of society. Munoo in Coolie and Bakha in Untouchable faced exploitation and sufferings caused by fellow human beings not by fate. The purpose of Anand’s novels is to mend the inhuman ways of the manipulators and to change their social behaviour in respect of the dull and drabbed class of society.
