HORTICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN HARYANA COST BENEFIT AND ANALYSIS OF DETERMINANTS OF FRUIT YIELDS

ABSTRACT

The term horticulture is comprised of two Latin words hortus, and cultra meaning garden and cultivation respectively. Horticulture is a science and art of production, utilization of crops like vegetables, fruits, spices, ornamental plants, medicinal and aromatic plants (Bailey, 1939; Jaskani and Khan 2021; Malik et al., 1994.) It may be termed as the dynamic branch of agriculture that may be further divided into five different branches - olericulture, pomology, floriculture, spices and condiments cultivation and medicinal & aromatic plants cultivation. The term olericulture means cultivation of vegetables. It is derived from the Latin where oleri means vegetables and cultra means cultivation. The term pomology deals with art and science of fruit cultivation. Here poma in Latin means fruit. The term floriculture is derived from Latin words florus and cultura where florus means flower. It is a branch of horticulture that the cultivation of flowers and ornamental crops. Spices and condiments cultivation is a significant component of horticulture. It relates to cultivation of plants rich in flavour (e.g. pepper, cardamom, clove, and nutmeg). Medicinal & Aromatic plants yield alkaloid and steroid which have got preventive and curative properties are known as medicinal plants. Those plants yield aromatic essential oil on steam distillation or solvent extraction.
