ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to understand the police system and its development during British period because the present police system in India is inherited as such from that period. There is no change in the basic structural establishment and functioning of the police in independent India.Police administration in India is as old as Indian civilization, but the present police system is inherited from the colonial period. Therefore, the study of development of police in the British Raj is necessary to understand the present set-up of the police system in India. The British first came to India in 1609 when captain Howkins Trader for the East India Company, landed at Surat. More than a century and half passed before the company began to play a role was content to complete for trading concessions, to set up its ware houses and commercial colonies, and to vie for favours at the courts of the Mughals and lesser rulers of the interior. From 1757 to 1857, hundred year period was a time to sought to solution to the Institutional problems of ruling an expanding colonial empire.
