ABSTRACT

Jane Austen was an eminent Victorian writer who pointed out the aftermath of marriage in a women life and how society strives to mould her according to the set of rules which were imposed on them by their ancestors. Austen has inspired many critical essays and literary anthologies. Her novels have inspired many films, from 1940’s Pride and Prejudice to more recent productions like Sense and Sensibility (1995), Emma (1996), Mansfield Park (1999), Pride & Prejudice (2005), Love & Friendship (2016), and Emma (2020).[c] Her novels have also inspired many TV adaptations, most notably Pride & Prejudice (1995), starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. The paper aims to spotlight the power of marriage institutions in detail and their influence on women life. The paper will also aim to trace the pattern of monopolisation that marriage as an institution exercises to manipulate the identity of women. Austen realistically painted the panoramic picture of women who were dominated by patriarchal society and gave I intricate attention to women right how women should be allowed to read so that they will be able to condition their mind and develop a rational view of life. She also pinpointed how marriage had the power to govern the life of women. She quite intricately structured her women characters and presents us with the realistic view of a woman living in Victorian times
