Optical fiber communication system has a very high information carrying capacity. The single mode and multimode fibers are being used for sending the signals. As an optical pulse propagates through the fiber it suffers dispersion. The dispersion in a single mode fiber is much less than in a multimode fiber. The bandwidth can be divided into hundreds channels using wavelength division multiplexer.
