Brain health and mood stabilization is deeply affected by bacteria in the intestines. Scientists have recognized communication between brain and gut for more than 100 years, studies in the early 19th and 20th centuries showing that a person’s emotional state can alter the function of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The microbiota produces metabolites that absorbed into the bloodstream, and some of these metabolites can cross the blood–brain barrier. The gut–brain axis refers to the biochemical signaling taking place between the gastrointestinal tract and the nervous system, altering the microbiota of mice results in changes in anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors.
