Influence of Human Resource Management Strategies on Teachers’ Job Performance in Secondary Schools in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Rivers State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT
This study investigated perceived influence of human resource management strategies on teachers’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Port Harcourt Metropolis. Three objectives, three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The total population was 1931 consisting of 46 principals and 1885 teachers from the 46 public senior secondary schools in Obio-Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas of Rivers State. A sample of 331 consisting of 46 principals and 285 teachers from 46 public senior secondary schools in Obio-Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas of Rivers State were derived using Taro Yamane’s formula and simple random sampling technique. The instrument for the study was a self-structured questionnaire titled: “Perceived Influence of Human Resource Management Strategies on Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire” which was on a 4-point rating scale of Very High Extent, High Extent, Low Extent and Very Low Extent. It was validated by two experts in Measurement and Evaluation and Department of Educational Management. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach Alpha statistics which yielded reliability indexes of 0.83, 0.76 and 0.96. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while z-test was used in testing the formulated null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was found that to a high extent staff training, orientation and promotion as human resource management strategies influence teachers’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Port Harcourt Metropolis. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that school managers should ensure teachers are trained and retrained so as to improve their job performance by helping them acquire skills and knowledge that will enable them deliver the curriculum effectively.
